Porlock is a stunning place for a walk in the crisp fresh air along the coastline or by its charming little harbour. If you are an avid walker or someone who likes nature and the outdoors then I would recommend a visit here to clear the cobwebs.
Porlock a village in Exmoor, Somerset in the UK is probably best known for it's traditional village steeped in history that goes back to the Stone Age; and it's history coupled with its' stunning surroundings; this sleepy little village is a real gem on the English Coast. Its variety of shops and cafes along the High Street have a quaint charm about them and provide a welcome place to stop and quench your thirst. Both the poets Wordsworth and Coleridge are well known for their love of Porlock and possibly it inspired their writing.
Perhaps the real gem of Porlock is a small, but perfectly formed Mrs. Jackson's Victorian Tea Room (may I also note it is dog friendly). The array of homemade cakes, jams, scones on offer along with huge selection of fine teas presented beautifully in dainty china makes this a real labour of love. The couple who run Mrs. Jackson's Victorian Tea Rooms play the part in full Victorian style dress and their knowledge of a good cake and tea is something to be commended.
Our trip started with a very friendly welcome and a huge selection of sandwiches to choose from cheese and tomato, smoked salmon and egg mayonaise to name a few. Next to decide on, was the type of homemade jam to go with the freshly baked scones and lashings of clotted cream. Finally to choose a cake, which was admittedly very difficult, but the pear and ginger or the lemon drizzle come highly recommended. All of this fantastic food is locally sourced, homemade and then washed down with a selection of teas (including the locally produced Miles' of Porlock) presented in china teapots. This really is a feast beyond imagination and I savoured every moment of being there. It is also worth noting special dietary requirements can be catered for.
So if you ever choose to have a day out in Somerset, be sure to pop into Mrs. Jackson's Tea Rooms, a labour of love worth savouring. It truly is a unique experience and one that I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised by and left feeling contented.
